Alfa Romeo

Tonale

The Tonale is a compact SUV, and though big things were expected of this stylish car, it hasn’t been as successful as expected, probably because it’s priced to compete with cars that are more established names, larger inside, and perceived to be more premium. Nonetheless, the Tonale looks great and is good to drive, but the latter doesn’t really matter to most buyers in this sector of the market. Perhaps the lack of a diesel option is also hindering its success, as only mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains are offered.

Stelvio

Named for a sinuous mountain pass in Italy, the Stelvio SUV could only be something from an Italian car maker such as Alfa Romeo. It looks stunning outside and in, plus it has a playful chassis that will really appeal to those that love driving – the entry-level petrol model is rear-drive only, though the more sensible (and affordable) diesels use all-wheel drive. As does the bonkers 510hp Quadrifoglio range-topper, a proper rival for any sports saloon.

Junior

Alfa Romeo’s first electric car is called the Junior, appropriately positioning it at the base of the Italian company’s lineup. It’s an incredibly important new model, however, as more buyers switch to electric power. Our first drive in the compact crossover indicated that the Junior will be as fun to drive as it is interesting to look at. Using the same electric motor and battery as other cars in the Stellantis group means we can expect a range of about 400km on a charge, though not in the headlining Veloce model that puts out 280hp.

Giulia

The curvy Giulia is Alfa Romeo’s equivalent to the likes of the BMW 3 Series, though the Giulia model range is far less expansive. In fact, buyers have a choice of petrol engines, only: either the 280hp 2.0-litre or the sensational 510hp 2.9-litre V6 found in the all-wheel-drive Quadrifoglio variant. Only those with deep pockets would consider the latter of course – and it’s worth the price as well – but the lower-powered model with rear-wheel drive is a sweet sports saloon, too.
