Subaru

Forester

The latest generation of the Subaru Forester arrives in Ireland shortly, and it looks a good deal slicker on the outside than the too-fussy outgoing version. There’s also an impressive-looking new cabin with a big, upright touchscreen, although thankfully sensible Subaru has kept some physical buttons too. The new hybrid flat-four engine isn’t the last word in economy, but anyone who loved the old Forester will doubtless appreciate the new one.

Outback

There’s an all-new Subaru Outback on the way, which ditches the estate-car origins of the current model and turns it into a big, chunky SUV. Which means you should definitely snap up one of the current Outbacks while you can, as its tall-estate layout makes way more sense, and makes for a better all-round car. It’s pricey and thirsty, but anyone who’s driven an Outback would never go back — this is a car that inspires loyalty.

solterra

Subaru’s insistence on only offering the Solterra with two motors and all-wheel drive is commendable in one sense — Subarus have almost always been four-wheel drive and all-weather capable — but it hamstrings the car’s range, limiting it to 465km officially, and much less in real-world conditions. The Solterra has actually got a lot going for it — it’s well-priced, sweet to drive and surprisingly capable off-road, but needs a bigger battery and more range.
